Giambologna “The Victory of Florence over Pisa” Hall of the Five Hundred of Palazzo Vecchio in Florence, Italy
Sculpture - Plaster (280 x 125 cm) 1565The statue of Giambologna, “Triumph of Florence over Pisa” was made in 1565, just before the wedding of Duke Francesco.
And to be in time, it was first executed in plaster to be present in the hall at the time of the wedding celebration before being finally carved into marble in 1570.
The plaster model is now exhibited at the Palazzo Vecchio, with marble sculpture now being in the Bargello Museum.
This “Triumph” is a young woman representing Florence, on an old man depicting Pisa, the symbol of Florence's youth and future on her neighbours.
The statues of Vincenzo de Rossi, representing the works of Hercules, are more classical in their themes but beautifully realized, particularly vivid and present. They were made between 1562 and 1584.
