Palazzo Vecchio, War of Pisa by Giorgio Vasari and Giovanni Battista Naldini Sala dei Cinquecento, the Hall of the Five Hundred in Florence in Italy

Three large frescoes recounting Florence's war against Pisa in 1505 adorn a wall in the Hall of the Five Hundred, of the famous “sala dei Cinquecento”.

Defeat of the Pisans at San Vincenzo

The Lifting of the Siege of Livorno by Maximilian

Taking of the Fortress of Stampace in Pisa

They were made by Giorgio Vasari and Giovanni Battisti Naldini between 1568 and 1571.

Vasari represented these battles by giving free rein to his talents with these war scenes where soldiers dressed in the antique are unleashed, running, fighting with fiery and merciless.

Minor details are painted with extreme precision, including geographical accuracy.

Vasari had sent Giovanni Battisti Naldini to the scene of these battles to draw precisely the landscapes of these battles and then reproduce them faithfully in these three monumental frescoes: a lot of preparation work to recount these battles against Pisa during a 13-year war.

The large dimensions of these paintings make us involved in these battles when we find ourselves facing them.

Thirteen metres long by 7m60 high for the one relating to the Pisans' defeat in Torre San Vincenzo in 1505, 7m60 high by 6m10 for the one where the Austrian Emperor Maximilian lifts the siege of Livorno and retreats in 1496.

And finally, 7m60 high for 13 metres wide for the third fresco relating the Florentines' capture of the fortress of the rock of Stampace in Pisa.

All of these frescoes, placed side by side, constitute a show of 7m60 high and more than 33 metres long: impressive!
