The Rape of the Sabine Women by Giambologna at the Accademia Gallery in Florence in Italy
Sculpture - Plaster (410cm high) 1582Giambologna (1529 - 13 August 1608)
This large plaster sculpture of Giambologna is the model used for the marble sculpture located under Piazza della Signoria's loggia.
The three characters are united to the point of being one in a spiral full of movement and passion that culminates with the young woman's raised arm.
Giambologna never conceived his sculpture as the Sabines' abduction, but only for him were three characters entwined together in the same movement.
It was only afterwards that the title of the abduction of the Sabines was given to his work.
